I have always enjoyed watching Il Commissario Montalbano, but watching it previously was a very passive language experience for me – I might recognise words and phrases here and there but honestly most of the language was going completely over my head. The Coffee Break with Montalbano Sessions helped me to better follow the context-specific vocabulary relevant to all episodes in the series, as well as gain a better insight into Sicilian and how it is used in the show.

I’m a beginner, is the Coffee Break With Montalbano Sessions for me?
For the moment, the Coffee Break is available only to learners who have some knowledge of Italian, at least an A2. If you’re not sure of your level, feel free to contact me at elfin@allaboutitalian.com and I’ll help with that. That’s what I’m here for.
What do I need to join?
You need to have easy access to Montalbano episodes. It doesn’t matter if they’re with English subtitles.
How much time do I need to invest?
You will need at least 1 hour and 45 minutes to go through an episode. You’ll be pausing it to take notes so calculate that as well. I always recommend watching the episode twice. Then another 15 minutes a day to take notes and go through the material I give you. These 15 minutes will help you improve your Italian considerably and become a more strategic language learner.
Is Coffee Break an individual type of class or group classes?
It’s an individual kind of program and experience.
I’m nervous about what you’ll be able to do with me during the session as my ability to speak Italian is low.
All the packages are cultural lessons as well so there will be parts in English to explain if your level of Italian doesn’t allow for it. The cultural parts are truly important to enrich the whole experience and push you in new directions. There’s no right or wrong way to do the Coffee Break Sessions, they’re a personal experience.
I don’t enjoy Montalbano, can we work on some other series?
Sure, I have a package specifically for that, it’s the Premium Movie Night Sessions.
Coffee Break is great fun! Not only do you get to watch an episode of Montalbano several times (always a joy!) but you get to chat to Elfin in Italian without feeling inadequate in your ability! It is a very useful way to pick up vocabulary as well as a little bit of Italian culture. I’m definitely going to do another one!
My favorite part of the show was discussing the episode. Your insight was invaluable because I feel that there are parts of the Italian culture I understand now that I didn’t before. It was so interesting to compare with my own culture.
